IHS Engineering 360:  Wireless Standard Wins Approval (September 26th, 2014)


The International Society of Automation (ISA) says that ANSI/ISA-100.11a-2011, "Wireless Systems for Industrial Automation: Process Control and Related Applications," has been unanimously approved by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as an international standard and will be published by year-end with the designation IEC 62734.

 


ExxonMobil:  Gas Detection made easier with ISA100 Wireless Gateways (September 10th, 2014)

Finding tiny, significant or potentially hazardous gas sources is an essential safety capability in many process applications, but just sensing is no good unless those signals and data can be delivered to people and systems that need them.
 
To help advance efforts to provide better protection, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Co. is investigating the use of wireless components to get gas indications where they need to go. Bin Xu, an instrumentation control engineer at ExxonMobil, recently sought to demonstrate and verify the feasibility and reliability of a battery-operated, ISA100 wireless gas detection system with a redundant gateway at Exxon's lab in Houston.

ISA100 is Ready for the Internet of Things (June 1st, 2014)

 

Most engineers would say that the International Society of Automation (ISA) 100 standard covers wireless instrumentation in process plants. This is correct, but it overlooks the comprehensive nature of changing wireless standards and best practices that encompass more than just process plants.

The availability of wireless components for process and discrete manufacturing applications is growing, and with broadening adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT), the number of devices and opportunities for building connections in a plant using Internet protocol (IP) networking is increasing. Choosing a wireless protocol that is “future proof” is important and was a chief concern throughout the ISA100 development cycle.

Process industries do not adopt new technologies instantaneously. On the contrary, they normally begin gradually and methodically with applications where that technology provides enough benefits to overcome the risk that it will not work at all or will not work reliably. Many users will test the new technology on a few pilot installations, usually for noncritical processes. With operational success and sufficient economic incentive, the new technology will be specified for new plant construction in locations where vendor support is available. Eventually the new technology will be specified for greenfield plant construction, major revamps, and modernization projects, ultimately becoming an industry norm.

Will IPv6 Give ISA100.11a a Leg Up? (September 2013)

Besides giving us another acronym to add to our repertoire, will the Internet Protocol, version 6 (IPv6) in the industrial sector make "Ethernet everywhere" extend to field sensors? The ISA100 development team certainly thinks and hopes so.  With the 128-bit addresses, IPv6 supports 216 or 3.4 x 1038 addresses. When you consider that we continue to use all the techniques that are allowing us to extend IPv4, this number may not equal infinity, but it is getting closer.
