Safety Integrated Systems (SIS) with ISA100 Wireless Gas Detection: From Concept to Case Study - A Webinar (August 30th 2018)

In this Webinar we will demonstrate how the object-based ISA100 Wireless™ standard allows users to benefit from the application of industrial wireless communications whilst achieving SIL2 for gas detection systems and will show a case study for wireless gas detectors employed at a major oil refinery.

GasSecure developed the GS01 wireless infrared (IR) hydrocarbon gas detector, which operates with several orders of magnitude lower power consumption than today’s standard wired gas detectors. This truly wireless battery powered field device is specifically designed for long term duty in industrial safety and monitoring applications including use in SIS.

The GS01 gas detector is fully compliant with the SIL2 (Safety Integrity Level) guidelines, as described in the IEC 61508 standard. This includes the communication with a safety controller, which implies that all network traffic must be fully controlled and any loss of contact to field wireless devices must be identified immediately. In this Webinar we will explain how GasSecure’s SafeWireless™ communication concept together with the object-based ISA100 Wireless™ standard achieves SIL2 for wireless gas detection systems.

We will address Quality-of-Service (QoS) employed within ISA100 Wireless and the support of foreign protocols in the application layer. The universal application layer enables communication to any host system protocol and in our example we use PROFINET together with the SIL3-certified open safety protocol PROFIsafe to enable end-to-end communication between field device and the safety controller.

Our case study is from a major oil refinery, where more than 100 wireless gas detectors are part of a fully SIL2 capable safety system.

Christian Heinlein,
Product Manager

Christian Heinlein joined GasSecure – now part of Dräger - in 2013. In his position as product manager he contributed to developing the collateral, product training and technical support concepts for the first wireless gas detector for industrial applications.

From earlier positions, amongst other with NEO Monitors, he has extensive knowledge in the field of infrared gas detection using tunable diode laser and MEMS technology.

Christian Heinlein holds a master degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University Braunschweig and a PhD in electronics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
