The New ISA100 Wireless System Certification Program

Research Triangle Park, NC—4 November 2020—The ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute (WCI) announced today the launch of a new system certification program.  The new certification offers assurances of system interoperability with ISA100 Wireless certified devices and stacks.

As adoption of wireless has matured, systems have scaled to thousands of devices, and applications have expanded so that control and safety over wireless are now routine.  Modern large-scale wireless networks cover entire operating sites: tank farms, jetties, offshore platforms, and more. These wireless networks serve mission-critical needs, involve substantial capital investment, and are subject to rigorous design engineering requirements. End users and EPCs seek proven technology with these important deployments and now demand rigorous certifications at the system level.
WCI will host a free webinar on 11 November to describe its new system certification program in greater detail. Those interested in attending the webinar can register here.

A New Addition to a Strong Family

The system certification program is an extension of the long-standing certification programs from WCI.
These programs include rigorous certification of protocol stacks (radio modules) that are embedded in field devices, application-level certification of field devices that integrate those stacks, and structured WCI interoperability workshops where ISA100 Wireless certified devices are tested with a variety of commercially available systems.

Additionally, WCI system certifications are designed to complement ISA/IEC 62443 cybersecurity certifications from WCI’s sister organization, the Security Compliance Institute (ISASecure®).

“Together, certifications from the ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute and ISASecure ensure state-of-the-art interoperability and cybersecurity. We anticipate that many users will require both certifications, especially for systems that are deployed at scale,” said Andre Ristaino, managing director of global alliances and consortia for the International Society of Automation (ISA).

An Invitation

Suppliers of ISA100-certified systems are encouraged to participate in WCI’s interoperability workshops. These events present unique opportunities for ISA100 Wireless experts to test many permutations of equipment and functions with a wide variety of certified ISA100 Wireless devices. User members are also encouraged to attend to witness the state-of-the-are in industrial wireless instruments and systems.

Interoperability workshops are a great way for ISA100 Wireless experts to establish working relationships with peers and with end users. The next interoperability workshop is scheduled for September 2021, with details to be determined in April 2021 to account for COVID-19-related travel restrictions.

WCI will host a free webinar on 11 November to outline its new system certification program in greater detail. Those interested in attending the webinar can register here.

About ISA

The International Society of Automation (isa.org) is a non-profit professional association founded in 1945 to create a better world through automation. ISA advances technical competence by connecting the automation community to achieve operational excellence. The organization develops widely used global standards; certifies industry professionals; provides education and training; publishes books and technical articles; hosts conferences and exhibits; and provides networking and career development programs for its 40,000 members and 400,000 customers around the world.

ISA created the ISA Global Cybersecurity Alliance (isa.org/ISAGCA) to advance cybersecurity readiness and awareness in manufacturing and critical infrastructure facilities and processes. The Alliance brings end-user companies, automation and control systems providers, IT infrastructure providers, services providers, system integrators, and other cybersecurity stakeholder organizations together to proactively address growing threats.

ISA owns Automation.com, a leading online publisher of automation-related content, and is the founding sponsor of The Automation Federation (automationfederation.org), an association of non-profit organizations serving as “The Voice of Automation.” Through a wholly owned subsidiary, ISA bridges the gap between standards and their implementation with the ISA Security Compliance Institute (isasecure.org) and the ISA Wireless Compliance Institute (isa100wci.org).
